Moore II) and other information. The site can be found at www.pagecountyinthecivilwar.yolasite.com. INTERESTED IN THE CIVIL WAR? JOIN THE PAGE COUNTY COMMITEE FOR THE SESQUICENTENNIAL OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR! The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission was created during the 2006 Session of the General Assembly for the purpose of planning for and commemorating the 150th anniversary of Virginia's participation in the American Civil War, the duration of which will be 2011 through 2015. Virginia is recognized as the national leader for this important milestone, which holds significant economic, educational and tourism opportunities for the Commonwealth. Virginia leads the nation by being the first state to create a Sesquicentennial Commission. It is important to realize that this is a commemoration, not a celebration. There is no joy to be found in a war that caused the death of over 620,000 Americans, divided families and tore apart a nation. Commemorative events and activities will be solemn remembrances that are meaningful, and inclusive of, all Virginians. The Commission is firm in its resolve to portray a balanced story of Virginia's participation in the American Civil War that includes the African-American, Union and Confederate perspectives. Statewide commemorations can be viewed at www.virginia.org and www.virginiacivilwar.org. Page County is distinguished from other Virginia counties in being the last destination of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson during the Civil War, having been the secret hiding place of valuable national records and a thoroughfare to many of the Shenandoah Valley's most famous campaigns. Our county is deep with the discovery of unknown stories of bravery and sacrifice from diverse perspectives of the American Civil War. We invite all individuals who are interested in establishing Page County's Civil War legacy within our Commonwealth and our Nation to join the Sesquicentennial Committee. Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 21at the Luray Caverns Restaurant. For information or questions please contact Sharon Sampsell, Cultural Programs Coordinator for Page County at 743-1180, or Karen Riddle, President of the Luray-Page Chamber of Commerce at 743-3915. NEXT MEETING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, JANUARY 11 AT 11:00 AM AT LURAY CAVERNS (STALAGTITE CAFE). CIVIL WAR HISTORICIAL SITES DRIVING TOUR BROCHURE! The Page County Committee for the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War has developed a new Civil War Historical Sites Driving Brochure. I thank you for your gift to history". This brochure will be available at the Luray-Page Chamber of Commerce, Town Offices, Luray Caverns and the Luray Department of Recreation or downloaded here.
